Written during the winter of 2022. This EP was recorded in a farmhouse in Virginia in January 2023, inspired by the classic 60s and 70s recording where a band would set up in the same room and track a song all at once. Bringing in top level musicians who have played with the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Kacey Musgraves, Hiss Golden Messenger and Marcus Mumford - we set about to capture a raw and authentic EP. A sonic departure from the very electronic Future Forever album that precedes this release.
Lyrically these songs were written during a dark period of my life. These songs in some way document that journey. They are songs which leave a lot of space for unanswered questions. Songs that, despite being rooted in the Christian faith and in Biblical inspiration, also embrace the unknown, the highs and the lows. A journey from understanding the definition of love in "Without Love", to a meditation on darkness of the soul and a prayer for light to come in "When The Night Comes Around", to a moment of realisation and repentance in "Take Me Back", a bold declaration of the character of God and the power of the cross in "Patient & Kind" and finally a simple, hopeful song of longing to stay close to Jesus in "To Know You".
Take Me Back is the title track from my latest EP, and really the central theme of the project. This song means so much to me and has become a pretty significant marking of a chapter in my life too. I had the honour of working with the team from Salt Studio on this project. They have become dear friends of mine since meeting them in Korea, and I was so delighted to be able to shoot some of these scenes with them last time I was there. We spoke about the song and its meaning and I left the rest in their capable hands. Their ability to explore concepts through visual art and tell stories through the simplest of details really stands out to me. I’m so delighted with what they were able to capture and convey in video form, for this song.
